 "Simply the best" 2009-12-06

I have had my W810i for 4 years, I think. However, I have a better scale to use. I have had it through 3 upgrades. I took advantage of Dial-a-phone's free gifts, and new phone. While owning the W810i, have received a 16Gb Ipod touch, and an Xbox. The phones I have received were a RAZR, and a C905. Before I received the C905, I tried out a blackberry pearl, Nokia N97 and an LG Arena.

THe RAZR felt cheap and plasticky.

Smartphones - nothing can touch the ipod touch for gadget-funtionality. However I don't like the iphone's shape for a phone. The blackberry Pearl's tracker ball feels gritty, and the menu is naff. I tried it as I thought I needed it for e-mails, but most phones can do e-mails if you set them up properly; the only difference with a blackberry is that you are kind of permanently online, for no extra cost. Its not that big an advantage over just manually accessing.

The N97's screen is stiff and clunky compared to the ipod touch. Likewise for the LG Arena - and it has a naff cube-type home window which would be a lot better but its too restricted in what applications you can place on it.

The C905 is the best of the lot (again Sony Ericsson), but I had to send it back for repair twice after 4 months of owning it. During that time I used my fall-back - the W810i, and although I have had the C905 back for a couple of months, I have been content with the W810i. I call him Willy now.

Incidentally the other phones were in trial periods (the Arena in a significantly extended one due to the good-nature of Dial-a-phone), or - in the case of the RAZR, were given away.

Today I went looking to see if I could still buy it, as - although there are no problems with my current one, I want to be ready. Its easy to set up short-cuts on the middle button: I have mine set up to text, toggle bluetooth, addressbook, and calculator. The light is a great gadget - really handy. A customer of mine changed his smartphone to this just on the basis of needing a small torch frequently. And the camera is still adequate for day-to-day - buy a proper camera if you want anything better. I also don't like slides, clams, etc. I just press a button and talk. If you want a phone which has just enough gadgetry, but being simple, robust, good-looking - this is it. I seriously believe it should have a lifetime achievement award. The music's fine: easy to access, but I have to admit that after I got the ipod touch, if I'm going on a trip when I would be spending any length of time with an earpiece or headset, nothing - absolutely nothing - touches the ipod touch. I call her "Touchy".

No - I have always come back to the W810i. Every pocket needs a good Willy.

"great phone but not without its drawbacks" 2007-11-26

i bought this phone when it was on offer and love it! its easy to pick up and use, the camera's good, although with no flash (compensated by a light you can turn on and off) the walkman is good on par with an ipod or mp3 player for quality, although the side buttons can be knocked and change the song (even when key lock is on) its a two edged sword, as it allows quick access to your songs when you want them, but sometimes when you dont.

the earphones are a bit wierd and tend to pull on one ear or the other, either that or fall out, but they're brilliant quality and have a great sound excluder so people dont hear what your listening to, unless you turn it right up to max all this and an inbuilt radio reciever, makes up for the earlier faults.

the phone is great, and only has a few niggley problems which are easily looked over, but can annoy you sometimes. still if you want an mp3 player and a phone. buy this!!!

Great as a phone, good as a camera, terrible as a Walkman.

My W810i gives off a loud hissing noise as soon as I play as song. You should always expect some hiss from a music player, but this is dreadful. Worst of all, the hiss is at a consistent volume so when you play a song at it's lowest volume setting the hiss is louder then the music. It also makes distortion noises between tracks. Seriously, my 80's Matsui tape player sounded better then this does. I googled the problem and there are plenty of other people out there who have it so this is a phone to avoid. Also the lowest volume setting is quite loud compared with other players I've used. It's a shame because the phone itself is great, easy to use and nice looking. But only buy it if you never plan to use the Walkman feature!

 "Great Phone!" 2007-09-24

I bought the w810i recently and knew it would be a great phone. Sony Ericsson are great for their batteries as they seem to last for ages.

The w810i standby time is said to be about 16 days - ofcourse this wouldn't happen as Im sure you will make calls, send texts etc. So really I would say on average you will need to charge it up every 5-7 days.

The talktime is an amazing 8 hours from fully charged, ideal for businessmen who use their phones a lot.

The torch is really powerful and will easily light up a room when pitch black. Handy if you should every need light.

Has all the usual stuff like bluetooth, music player, camera, video, etc.

Brilliant phone and would recommend to anyone. However, Im not keeping it as I have just ordered the w880i as it looks great and is really thin.

I will leave a review for the w880i when I receive it so have a read if your interested!

 "No good for music" 2007-07-16

It's a nice phone and camera, but not a very good MP3 player.

The playback suffers from hiss and distortion, which is most noticable on the headphones during quiet parts of a song and at low volume. This is surprising for a phone branded as a 'Walkman'.

I suggest you type 'W810i distortion' or 'W810i hiss' into Google and read the many complaints before buying this phone.
